Small Print Baker & Roastery -Overview

Being one of Perth´s few speciality coffee roasters, Small Print is a popular spot in Perth´s busy CBD area. Have you longed for the perfect coffee? This might be the place to check out!

The service here is outstanding! Walking through the doors and being greeted by this jolly team of cheerful baristas sure does make you feel quite happy and welcome. They are incredibly professional and the atmosphere is relaxed and sophisticated all at once. A robust wooden bar in the middle of the room reminds you of a wooden cabin in the Swiss alps and the low ceiling gives the cafe just the right amount of cosiness. The cafe is quite big so on regular days it doesn’t become too crowded and you have the choice between sitting inside or in a nice outside area. The ambiance and location makes it a perfect lunch stop for the busy worker. When it comes to the prices…well it is what you can expect in the busy CBD area, neither the cheapest or the more expensive! The price of the breakfast varies between 6-25 dollars and lunch prices varies between 19-26 dollars.

Whether you are a dedicated coffee enthusiast cultivating your love for the beverage or simply want to enjoy a  good cup of coffee together with some delicious food, Small Print will definitely satisfiy your needs. To find this (fairly hidden) hang out, head down St Georges Terrace and you will find the cafe in the basement of the Print Hall.

The cafe is open Monday-Friday 06:30-16:00.

 Small Print- CoffeeSmall Print

In a partnership with the Dukes of Melbourne, Small Print source and roast their own coffee beans (you can actually see the huge roaster behind glass walls in the far end of the cafe). Ordering a coffee here is not really the same as everywhere else in the city. Usually, you get beans from the cafe’s own house blend while at Small Print, you can actually choose your own coffee beans. The beans are sourced for all over the world with each origin giving a specific taste palette. Do you want a chocolaty and nutty taste to your coffee? Go with a Brazilian bean! Is it a coffee with more of  fruity flavors that floats your boat? Be a dare devil and try the Ethiopian bean.   It might be useless to say that the flavor combinations are endless? Don´t worry if your knowledge of coffee beans is not the most solid (or existent even), these guys live and breathe coffee and will gladly give you suggestions what will be a winning combination! Are you already an enlightened coffee drinker? Well, this can be an interesting chance to try some new taste combinations and expand you knowledge even further.

Small Print Breakfast & Pastries

Serving amazing coffee is not the only thing Small Print values, they are also extremely keen on serving good food! Their breakfast menu consists of simple dishes where eggs on toast definitely is the top dog. They use as many seasonal products as possible and of course, as fresh as possible  plus that everything is sourced in WA.

No matter what ends up on your plate, you can be sure it has been created with great amounts of love by the wonderful people in the cafe´s own bakery (okay, the vegemite and butter is an exception). Here you can get a wonderful slow fermented bread that takes no less than 24 hours (!) to make. In other words, the bread you order on a Monday begins to get made on a Saturday (see the length these guys go to?!). If your goal is to satisfy your sugar cravings, safe bets to go with are the classic Chocolate brownie, the New York Cheese cake or why not a Lemon meringue.

Mooba- Overview

If you walk out of the train station at Cockburn central and walk toward the main square, you will see a container ( one of those shipping containers you can see down at the harbour in Freo), that is one of the three super cute Mooba cafes that are located in Perth. There is another one in Wembley and just recently, a little pop-up cafe in Mandurah saw the light of day.

It is not only the fact that this cafe happens to use an old shipping container as its business space ( already this cafe is ranking high on the cool scale) but also that they are love having kids around! Usually cafes are cramped with little space for kids to run around and play, not at Mooba. The cafe in Cockburn Central has a huge area where kids can run around and play while their parents sip on their coffee, in fact the staff here seem to rather enjoy the the kids at the cafe making a mess. They also have a couple of bean bags for those keen to take a snooze or for one of the movie nights or other community events the cafe has hosted such as open mic nights or BBQ.

The price is also cheap for being in Perth ( might be a slight variation depending on the cafe that you are visiting).

The cafes are open from 7 am-5pm (weekdays) & 8am-2pm Saturdays.

Mooba-Coffee

Mooba uses coffee beans from local roasters Five senses coffee and theMooba-cafe Perthy use their own custom blend with beans from Guatemala, Brazil and India. Even though the blend changes a couple of times each year, they manage to maintain their typical Mooba taste which is a quite sweet coffee with hints of caramel and chocolate ( you’ll definitely don’t need to add sugar to it). And if it turns out that you love it? Lucky you! Spend a couple of bucks and buy the cafe’s own blend of coffee beans and make your own Mooba coffee at home. For those of you that don’t feel like adding to your daily coffee intake (or you’re not slaves of caffeine whatsoever) the cafe has an extensive drink menu such as juices, milkshakes and smoothies for you to choose from.

Mooba-snacks & pastries

Mooba-Cafe PerthWhat the cafe has to offer might vary from cafe to cafe but most of the cafes are doing basic food such as toasts,  healthy breakfasts alternative and “on-the-go lunches”. A key word is definitely health, organic food and raw food. Cookies, muffins and banana bread are big sellers but the biggest seller of them all are the raw balls. Why not taste the superchoc obsession? Are you a parent and you brought your child along? There are other healthy options such as Soul Pops which is made from a 100% fruit or just go with a colourful jelly cup.

Lowdown – An Inner City Caffeine Fix

IMG_2430

With its low lighting, contemporary wooden panelling, and a high percentage of  bearded baristas in t-shirts, Lowdown is ultra-modern, sleek, and unapologetically  cool. Centrally located in the Cloister arcade off Hay Street, it is the ideal place for city  workers and shoppers searching for a caffeine fix.

When I arrived with a friend early one Wednesday morning we found the area  swarming with young professional types, passing through for their morning coffee. As  the cafe itself is quite small and was full by the time we arrived, we decided to order  our drinks takeaway and sit in the adjoining atrium, which was already milling with  other customers. Interestingly, we didn’t need to line up to collect our takeaway  drinks. Instead, we sat down and they were brought to us by a nimble-footed,  converse-wearing worker, weaving skilfully between the cafe and the atrium delivering  people their drinks.

Just as the service aimed to please, so too did the coffees. Unlike many coffee shops, they don’t use coffee blends (beans sourcedIMG_2429 from a variety of places). Instead, they use Indian Single Origin beans that are supplied to them by Fiori, a Western Australian coffee roaster.

My long black was strong and flavoursome and certainly worked wonders to perk me up on a mid-week morning. My friend, an avid tea drinker was also full of compliments for her English Breakfast tea. Costing us $3.50-$4 for a regular drink, the prices were on par with other coffee shops in the area. As well as drinks there are also a range of sandwiches and muffins available for purchase.

Well, that’s the lowdown (sorry couldn’t help it!), go and try it out for yourself!
